Motion to Confirm Arbitration Award

Asks the court to turn an arbitration award into an enforceable court judgment.

Governing rule
Federal Arbitration Act, 9 U.S.C. § 9
Read the rule

What it is

A request asking a court to convert an arbitration award into a court judgment. Confirmation makes the award enforceable through ordinary judgment collection tools and gives the winning party a public judgment that can be collected if the losing party does not voluntarily comply.

When it's used

Filed after an arbitrator issues an award and the winning party wants enforceable judgment or the losing party has not voluntarily paid or complied.

What the other side does

The opponent may oppose confirmation and move to vacate, modify, or correct the award on limited statutory grounds. Courts do not usually relitigate the merits of the arbitration.

Common outcomes

Confirmation is often granted unless a valid challenge fits the narrow statutory grounds. Once confirmed, the award becomes a judgment.
