Supreme Court ruling limits scope of Voting Rights Act provision amid redistricting battle WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down a Louisiana voting map, finding that lawmakers redrew the map in an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, in a ruling that weakens the reach of a key Voting Rights Act provision and could provide Republicans a boost at the ballot box this fall. The justices ruled 6-3 that Louisiana's newly redrawn congressional map relied "too heavily on race." The map had created a second majority-Black district in the state. The conservative-majority court did assert that the opinion was a limited ruling that still preserved the Voting Rights Act. Still, the court's liberal justices argued in dissent that the justices are dismantling the landmark civil rights law.
