Preliminary Injunction

A court order requiring or prohibiting action while the lawsuit is pending, granted only on a strong showing of likelihood of success and irreparable harm.

Plain-English definition

A preliminary injunction is a court order issued early in a case that maintains the status quo or compels specific conduct while the case proceeds. To get one, the moving party must show: (1) likelihood of success on the merits, (2) irreparable harm without the order, (3) balance of hardships favors the movant, and (4) the public interest. Granted sparingly; appealable immediately.
